Box Office Success: Zootopia 2's Record-Breaking Thanksgiving Weekend

Zootopia 2 breaks records with a $500 million worldwide opening, dominating the Thanksgiving box office both domestically and internationally.

Welcome to another edition of Charts with Dan. I'm currently on the road, so apologies for any delays due to construction issues at my hotel. Regardless, we have exciting news to dive into regarding the box office performance over Thanksgiving weekend, particularly the spectacular opening of Zootopia 2.

Zootopia 2 led the box office with an impressive $100.2 million over the three-day Thanksgiving weekend, opening officially on Wednesday and raking in a five-day total of $158.8 million domestically. This phenomenal achievement places Zootopia 2 at the sixth-highest domestic opening weekend for the year, showing a strong debut despite opening mid-week.

Internationally, Zootopia 2 surpassed expectations by grossing $400.4 million, leading to a staggering total of $500.6 million globally. Its sensational success in China contributed significantly, achieving the seventh-best opening of all time in the country for any film, and illustrating the massive appeal this film has worldwide.

Other films in the box office over Thanksgiving included Wicked for Good, earning $61.7 million domestically over three days and $91.7 million over five days, though it saw a significant drop compared to previous performances. Meanwhile, smaller entries like Now You See Me, Now You Don't and Predator Badlands showcased respectable, if not groundbreaking numbers.

Overall, the box office has seen an uplifting trend with numbers not only surpassing post-pandemic averages but also meeting pre-pandemic figures for the second consecutive weekend. As the holiday season continues, anticipation builds for upcoming releases that might further boost these figures, including the eagerly awaited Avatar, Fire, and Ash.

Stay tuned for more updates as we track this box office journey, and thank you for bearing with us through the logistical challenges of this week's show.
