Review: 'Marty Supreme' and Timothy Shalamé's Compelling Journey

A captivating performance by Timothy Shalamé in "Marty Supreme," exploring an unlikable character's journey to greatness.

Marty Supreme is directed by Josh Safdie. It stars Timothy Shalamé as an expert pingpong player who is also a very good hustler and generally rude person. This year, the Safdie brothers went their separate ways. Benny directed The Smashing Machine and Josh made Marty Supreme. The film tells the story of a young man whose dream is not respected, taking him to hell and back in the pursuit of greatness.

Marty Supreme is often likened to Uncut Gems. Both films feature fast-paced narratives filled with intense and socially awkward scenes. They depict characters who are skilled at selling objects or ideas. Marty Supreme is a two and a half-hour epic that includes one of the best performances of the year by Timothy Shalamé and exceptional cinematography by Darius Khondji.

The film challenges traditional storytelling by emphasizing the main character's obsession with greatness. Although Marty consistently makes morally wrong choices, the film captivates with his unrelenting ambition, drawing comparisons with movies like Nightcrawler and American Psycho. Marty’s journey features a cycle of small successes followed by large failures, portraying him as a character who fails upwards.

Despite his unlikable nature, Marty Supreme fascinates viewers much like a compelling reality show. Josh Safdie’s direction and the writing by Ronald Bronstein leave audiences mesmerized. The film masters sequences that feel unscripted with overlapping dialogue and a barrage of noise, akin to Good Time and Uncut Gems.

The movie’s pingpong matches, performed convincingly by Shalamé, are exhilarating. Marty’s backstory remains unexplored, focusing instead on his ambition. The film explores themes of performance and deception, featuring characters who fake their way to success. Marty Supreme stands as a must-see film of the year, with riveting performances and direction that are hard to look away from.
