Ryan Johnson's Latest Mystery Movie: Unveiling Wake Up Dead Man

Ryan Johnson returns with "Wake Up Dead Man," a new Knives Out mystery, unraveling a tale of intrigue, religion, and the pursuit of truth.

Everyone's favorite detective with a southern accent is back with yet another case. If you're a fan of mystery movies and books, then you're likely familiar with the unique charm of Benoit Blanc's cases, which always draw viewers back, even after the mystery is unraveled. Ryan Johnson's Knives Out from 2019 is a notable example, known for its hidden details and clever Easter eggs that reveal themselves upon each rewatch.

In his latest installment, "Wake Up Dead Man," Johnson offers another layer of complexity, centered around a corrupt reverend, a priest with a boxing past, and a fortune in jewels. This time, religion and greed intertwine as central themes, marking a shift from the purely fiscal motivations seen in earlier films.

The plot kicks into gear following an intense Palm Sunday service, leading to the mysterious death of Jefferson Wixs, found by Judensity in a seemingly impossible locked-room scenario. This intricate murder mystery involves three scheming characters: Martha, Dr. Nat Sharp, and groundskeeper Samson, who conspire against Wix with a meticulously crafted plan involving poison, deception, and an attempt to steal a mythical jewel known as Eve's apple.

The investigation unfolds with detective Benoit Blanc collaborating with Jud and Geraldene Scott to untangle the intricate web of mystery. As the layers peel away, the film reveals deep ties to religious symbolism and the complexities of human motivations.

Johnson has also expressed a desire to move away from the "Knives Out mystery" brand in the titles of his films, stating a preference for each movie to stand as a distinct novel with its own story. Nonetheless, "Wake Up Dead Man" still carries the familiar tag in promotional materials but is a fresh narrative in the filmmaker's heart.

The title itself nods to a 1997 song by U2, which, along with its religious connotations, sets the thematic stage for the film. Throughout the story, references to Catholic and Christian themes permeate the decision-making processes of characters, including Blanc himself.

As the story progresses, layers of intrigue reveal themselves, with Martha's involvement being pivotal to derailing Wix's plans, spurred by her awareness of his ambitions and a shared family legacy involving the legendary jewel.

The film is set to premiere on Netflix on December 12th. As anticipation builds, viewers can enjoy piecing together the clues and unraveling the mysteries that Ryan Johnson so expertly weaves. "Wake Up Dead Man" promises to deliver the same thrill and attention to detail that fans have come to love from the Knives Out franchise.
