Review: The Great Muppet Caper - A Humor-filled Adventure

The Great Muppet Caper, a film noir style Muppet movie, blends humor with impressive technical feats, and charming musical moments.

The Great Muppet Caper is the second Muppet movie made and holds a special place for some as a personal favorite. The film is often viewed as average, lacking the sentimental side typical of other Muppet movies like The Muppet Movie or Muppets Take Manhattan. However, it balances sentiment with humor, adding to its charm.

This installment has a film noir vibe centered around a jewel thief plot. The Muppets, working at a newspaper, are fired but decide to pursue a jewel thief in England. The film is filled with fourth-wall breaks, contributing to its humor.

Kermit, mistaken Miss Piggy for Lady Holiday, a victim of the jewel theft, creates comedic romance when the real thief, played by Charles Grodin, falls for Miss Piggy too, framing her for their crimes.

Technically impressive, the film includes scenes like Miss Piggy's water aerobics and intricate bicycle stunts. While newer movies might display remarkable effects, the 1981 release was groundbreaking at its time.

The songs are earworms, with "Happiness Hotel" and the opening number being particularly catchy. Unlike Rainbow Connection, these tunes are less known but equally captivating.

It holds a humorously cynical tone while maintaining the upbeat Muppet spirit. It features repetitively funny yet sometimes excessive fourth-wall jokes, blended with British comedy flair, adding a unique edge.

The Great Muppet Caper stands out for its style, humor, and technical achievements. It may not be everyone's favorite, overshadowed by more magical counterparts, but its dedication to humor and unique storytelling provides endless entertainment.
