It's coming. The fifth and final season of Amazon Prime's The Boys is slowly but surely building anticipation ahead of its April 2026 release date, thanks in no small part to the recently released teaser trailer that's chock full of 'soup' action.
While the footage promises the explosive conclusion that fans have been waiting for, one specific moment has drawn considerable speculation: the first official look at Jared Padalecki joining the cast. For years, fans of Supernatural have clamored to see Padalecki reunite with his former co-star Jensen Ackles, who of course plays Soldier Boy, as well as with Supernatural and The Boys showrunner, Eric Kripke.
Now that it's finally happening, the burning question remains: who is Jared Padalecki playing? As of now, Padalecki's role is one of the production's many tightly guarded secrets. Amazon and Kripke have essentially turned this ambiguity into a narrative of its own, refusing to confirm whether Padalecki will be a soup, a corporate stooge, or something else entirely. The only concrete details offered by the actor himself come from August 2025, where he stated, "I'll say this much: my character is very excited to meet Soldier Boy." He followed that up by stating outright that he would be in episode 5, giving us a little more clear understanding of both when to expect him and who he's likely to meet.
However, beyond that, details are maddeningly vague, and of course, the source material offers little guidance. While The Boys is based on the comics by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, the TV series has famously deviated from the comics' timelines and character arcs. Soldier Boy himself is a prime example, with Ackles's portrayal of a violent, radioactive relic from the past being vastly different from the comic version. Consequently, readers cannot simply look up Padalecki's character to spoil the surprise. He could be playing a completely original character created specifically to fit the show's altered mythology.
If we're going strictly by his very brief appearance in the teaser, then what we can gather is that Padalecki's character is at least working with Homelander and Soldier Boy, given that both of them are walking behind him in his single shot. He also appears to be well off, given his attire. But to take anything more from that aspect would be a stretch.
We can maybe gather a little bit of information from Padalecki saying that he's excited to meet Soldier Boy. He could be playing a contemporary soup who grew up idolizing Vought’s original hero—a fanboy with power sort of deal, which is a dangerous combination in The Boys universe. If that's the case, it would certainly fit as an ironic casting choice given his time on Supernatural, a fandom which is famously more than a little out of pocket with its infatuations. That said, this is pure speculation.
As noted, Amazon and the show's producers have been tight-lipped about the details. Additionally, Misha Collins, who played Castiel in Supernatural, is also a part of The Boys season 5. Though, if information on Padalecki is scarce, the details on Collins are even less. He doesn't even show up in the teaser.
Whatever the case may be, fans are excited to see Jared Padalecki make his debut on The Boys. Better late than never.
