Latest Wonderman Trailer Analysis

Analyzing the new Wonderman trailer, exploring its revelations about Simon Williams's character and powers.

The latest trailer for Wonderman has dropped and much like the teaser that came before, it looks pretty darn good. But what did we learn from this latest release? Let's dig into that.

You got this, man. On one hand, this new trailer doesn't reveal much that we didn't already know. Simon Williams is a struggling actor who desperately wants the role of Wonderman, which in this universe was a previously established superhero franchise that appears to have been produced in the 1970s. Early on in the trailer, one title screen states that he has a secret over a shot of Simon's eye generating some form of energy. But before we dig into that, the trailer moves on to reintroducing us to Trevor Slatterie, who seems to be helping Simon in his quest to become the new Wonderman. The most likely scenario here is that Trevor is posing as Simon's agent in order to accompany him on this meeting with Von Kovak, the director charged with heading the latest Wonderman adaptation and fighting superhero fatigue. A clear reference to Marvel's own recent issues.

Perhaps the most notable difference between this trailer and the previous one is that it actually shows Simon Williams powers, albeit just a taste. We don't see him battling villains or flying through the air, but we do get some super strength as seen when he absolutely demolishes this kitchen island and several instances where he appears to be channeling the ionic energy inherent in his body, like with the aforementioned shot of his eye and shots of his hands pulsing with energy and moving objects around him. See, Wonderman is essentially a living battery of organic ionic energy, a state achieved after undergoing a radical experiment that replaced his human cellular structure with a near indestructible energy source. This transformation grants him super strength and invulnerability rivaling that of Thor, while also rendering him effectively immortal, as he no longer requires food, air, or sleep, and can reconstitute his body even after total physical destruction.

Beyond raw physical power, he can manipulate his internal energy to fly at super sonic speeds, emit devastating ionic blasts, and shift into a pure energy form that allows him to alter his physical size and density. One effect of his powers is a bad case of glowing red eyes, which in the comics, Simon can't control while initially trying to become a professional Hollywood actor. Considering that in the Wonderman show, Simon has to sign a waiver ensuring he's not a superhero, we could see this conundrum occur in the series. There's even a shot during the final quick cutting montage where he's screaming and his eyes are glowing an even more distinctive red while he's positively freaking out and causing havoc around him. He's also seen at the Wonderman premiere wearing red sunglasses, which is clearly referencing his look in the comics.

Oh, and hey, we also get an appearance from the Department of Damage Control here, once again represented by Arian Moyad's, agent P. Clearary, who previously showed up in Spider-Man No Way Home and Miss Marvel. He mentions to Trevor that Simon is an extraordinary threat, thereby telling us that Simon's powers aren't going to stay hidden for very long. At the end of the trailer, Trevor even asks if Simon can fly, which Simon conveniently fails to answer, although they do seem to be getting chased through the streets, so fair enough. And that's pretty much it for the latest Wonderman trailer. What do you think? Pick up on anything we missed? Let us know in the comments. And thank you for watching Screen Rant.
