Could the DCU Face a Supergirl Issue?

Exploring the potential risks of DCU's Supergirl mimicking Guardians of the Galaxy's tone.

The recent trailer drop for Supergirl in the DC Universe (DCU) has sparked a conversation about potential tonal similarities with James Gunn's previous work with Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. Concerns have been raised that Supergirl, under Gunn's influence, might adopt a style reminiscent of Guardians, which could pose challenges for the DCU's identity.

When James Gunn, known for his unique style that he established with Guardians of the Galaxy and hinted at with The Suicide Squad, was appointed to helm DC projects, there was an immediate concern about the potential overlap in style. Gunn had the opportunity to prove otherwise with the recent Superman, which, despite lighter moments, retained a sincere and mythic tone that stayed true to the character's essence, unlike the often humor-laden spectacles Marvel is known for.

Supergirl, played by Millie Alco, on the other hand, inherently carries a more chaotic narrative. Her story, filled with loss and a sharp worldview, could easily slip into a Guardians-esque presentation if not handled with care. Supergirl's narrative involves navigating cosmic adventures with humor, which are familiar elements in Gunn's arsenal.

The main challenge lies in presentation rather than subject matter. Guardians of the Galaxy worked because of its fresh, unapologetic embrace of weirdness, a tone that over time has become mainstream within Marvel, leading to audiences growing tired of the formulaic humor that undercuts emotional moments.

For DC, which is trying to solidify its cinematic universe post numerous reboots, it is crucial to avoid falling into the same trap. The universe needs a unique and cohesive identity to captivate its audience. Superman’s hopeful foundation stands at risk if Supergirl veers too closely to a familiar, Guardians-like rhythm.

James Gunn has been open about his creative process, often adding humor as the final layer rather than the base, which raises expectations that Supergirl won't just be another cosmic comedy. Ideally, Supergirl should confront its emotional core sincerely, offering something DCU can call its own.

Additionally, there’s a need for restraint within Supergirl’s portrayal to ensure it isn’t mistaken for another extension of Marvel’s brand but rather a distinct difference in DCU’s framework. This includes handling humor in a way that doesn't overshadow the serious overtones of Supergirl’s story.

While Supergirl holds promising potential for a unique space narrative, the success of the DCU’s future depends on maintaining a distinct identity, resisting the pull of previous successes to craft new paths that invigorate rather than imitate.
