Box Office Report: "Avatar: Fire and Ash" Reigns, "28 Years Later" Opens in Second

This week in box office news, "Avatar: Fire and Ash" stays at number one with $14.5M. "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple" opens in second place.

Welcome to another edition of Charts with Dan. This week, we're looking at box office estimates due to the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend in the US. As a quick note, this will be my last broadcast from my studio before I head to the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, where I'll cover the event for two weeks.

The box office this past weekend saw "Avatar: Fire and Ash" maintain its position as the number one film. It has been remarkably steady, achieving a $14.5 million intake over the three-day weekend, marking its fifth week at the top.

In second place, "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple" opened with $13 million, a notably lower performance compared to its predecessor. Despite this, the film has garnered positive reviews but must overcome its previous installment's mixed reception to climb the charts.

"Zootopia 2" continues to perform well, securing third place with $9.2 million, merely an 8% drop, and positioning itself as a contender for the top film of 2025 domestically.

As for other films, "The Housemaid" continues to hold strong with over $100 million domestic, and "Marty Supreme" sees a rise in attention following a Golden Globe win by Timothy Shalomé.

Globally, "Avatar: Fire and Ash" continues to dominate, with a worldwide total at $1.31 billion. "The Housemaid" and "Zootopia 2" also perform robustly in international markets.

Looking ahead, we have significant releases like "Mercy" and "Return to Silent Hill" coming to theaters, promising to stir interest in what's typically a quieter time of year.
