MGM Celebrates a Century: From Film Studio to Entertainment Giant

Explore the 100-year journey of MGM, its founders, challenges, and its evolution into a modern entertainment giant.

MGM, or Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, celebrated its 100th anniversary on April 17, 2024. The journey of this iconic studio is marked by its evolution from a pioneering film and theater company into a modern entertainment conglomerate.

Founded in 1924 through a merger of several businesses, including Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures, and Louis B. Mayer Productions, MGM quickly became a dominant force in Hollywood. Notable figures like Irving Thalberg played critical roles in its early success, blending art with innovative business strategies.

The studio faced numerous challenges, including the Great Depression, technological shifts, and changing audience preferences. Despite these, MGM managed to remain a leader in the industry, producing classics such as "Ben-Hur," "Gone with the Wind," and "The Wizard of Oz."

Over the decades, MGM underwent several ownership changes and strategic shifts, including a focus on real estate under Kirk Kerkorian's leadership and later mergers like that with United Artists. Following financial struggles and bankruptcy in the late 20th century, MGM acquired significant film libraries and eventually became part of Amazon in 2021.

Today, MGM stands as a testament to resilience, adapting to industry changes while remaining a central player in global entertainment.
