Sony Unveils Innovative Camera Technology at NAB 2023

Sony unveils camera innovations at NAB with the Venice 2, Verano, and FR7 models, featuring groundbreaking tech for filmmakers.

Blackmagic Design is creating revolutionary solutions for film post-production and television. Today, we talk to Kayte Ellen, a leading educator on the Sony Cinema Line, about the exciting new developments at the Sony booth at NAB.

One of the highlights is the Venice 2 in a multi-d setup, showcasing its dual capability for cinema and live multicam applications. Also featured is the Venice Rialto mode and the highly anticipated Verano camera. Announced last fall and recently released, the Verano is designed for single camera operators with its internal raw recording capabilities, offering 16-bit image depth.

The difference between 8-bit, 10-bit, and now 16-bit recording enables more accurate color reproduction, essential for capturing delicate scenes like sunsets without banding artifacts. This improvement parallels the richness of film negatives.

Additionally, the booth displays the FR7 robotic PTZ camera, ideal for seamless cuts in multi-camera setups due to its identical sensor and color science with the FX6. This matches the visual consistency across Sony’s camera lineup.

Moreover, the booth hosts a Creator Rig, using an FX3 with anamorphic lenses by Atlas, demonstrating its versatility in setups requiring easy handling and creative freedom.

For filmmakers wanting a hands-on experience, the Sony Digital Media Production Center offers opportunities to test these innovative tools, hosting events across the U.S. to educate and connect the community with Sony’s latest technology.

Katie Ellen praises Sony’s dedication to fostering creativity by providing spaces that merge education with practical application, making groundbreaking technology accessible to emerging filmmakers.
