The Turmoil Behind Exorcist Prequels: Dominion and Exorcist The Beginning

Exploring the turmoil and production complexities of the Exorcist prequels, Dominion and Exorcist the Beginning.

The production of "The Exorcist" prequels, "Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist" and "Exorcist: The Beginning," exemplifies the turbulence and unpredictability of filmmaking in Hollywood. Both films faced significant production challenges and were released to mixed reviews, though neither can claim significant success.

The original "Exorcist" had set a high bar with its chilling narrative and psychological depth. However, when the studio aimed to capitalize on its legacy, they embarked on a fraught journey filled with creative differences and financial pressures.

Initially, the project was to be directed by John Frankenheimer, but his sudden illness led to his departure, passing the baton to Paul Schrader. Schrader’s version, "Dominion," leaned heavily into thematic depth, exploring human choice and morality against a backdrop of supernatural horror.

Unfortunately, the studio found Schrader’s cut lacking in immediate appeal, leading them to rehire a new team to shoot "Exorcist: The Beginning" under the direction of Renny Harlin. This version traded thematic depth for straightforward horror thrills.

Despite an expensive overhaul and restaging, both prequels were met with criticism. "Dominion" was ultimately released with minimal additional work and budget, and "Exorcist: The Beginning" failed to recoup its lavish production costs.
