Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Review: Deep Storytelling, But Not For Beginners

Dan Merl reviews 'Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle', the first part of a trilogy concluding the anime series. Not for beginners!

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle is now in theaters. As the first of three planned movies to conclude the anime series Demon Slayer Kametsu no Yaiba, which began in 2019 and includes four TV seasons and the movie Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, the global box office leader in 2020, here's what you need to know.

This film follows directly from the TV series, offering no recaps or introductions to characters or events. We rejoin the Demon Slayer Corps as they tackle the challenges at the Infinity Castle, home to the demon king Man Kibutsuji. Our protagonist Tannero, spurred by personal tragedy, aims to avenge his family and cure his demonized sister.

Infinity Castle is the culmination of a narrative arc originating from the 2016 manga. The Demon Slayer Corps finds themselves transported to Infinity Castle, where they prepare to confront Man and his upper echelon of demons.

The movie features intense battles and delves into the series' rich storytelling despite some pacing issues in its lengthy third act. The animation elevates traditional elements, although some structural choices could benefit from tighter editing. Hardcore fans will appreciate the comprehensive inclusion of manga details, but this can detract from the film’s momentum.

While the film's narrative could benefit from more balance, the outstanding animation and complex character developments make it worthwhile. However, newcomers might find the storyline confusing, suggesting the film is best suited for fans familiar with the series.
