Review: Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 7 - A Missed Opportunity

A review of Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 7, critiquing James Gunn's direction and the show's progression.

Oh man, James Gunn seems to have missed the mark. While some fans stand by his every decision, I'm really curious how they can defend this one after such an incredible Episode 6. From the start, my expectations were low when I saw Gunn didn't direct it. Although I'm not saying it was a terrible episode—it had its moments—he completely glossed over the Earth X situation, highlighting instead that our two worlds might not be so different, a theme that felt underdeveloped.

In this episode, characters grapple with their roles on Earth X, but key criticisms include the oversight of significant societal issues, like choosing not to fight major evils such as the Nazi regime. While Gunn built anticipation for these final episodes, they seem to trend towards being more Peacemaker without deeper ramifications for the DC Universe. Comparisons to Marvel's Disney Plus shows arise, suggesting big promises without risk of becoming essential viewing.

The narrative feels repetitive, echoing past seasons without substantial progression or introduction of diverse characters and perspectives. Gunn hinted at future cameos, but concern grows they'll be fleeting and lacking impact.

Characters like Economos suffered bad character moments, being quippy yet folding under pressure in key scenes. Judo Master had its moments, though, raising questions about the strategic portrayal of antagonists. Iconic moments from previous episodes seemed to lose their weight quickly, signaling issues with pacing and narrative commitment.

A potential Season 3 raises questions given the show's current trajectory. While talented actors make their mark, there's uncertainty if this is enough to carry another season. Instead, other DC shows could introduce renewed viewer interest, perhaps sidelining characters like Keith who fail to resonate. Despite expectations, this episode left desires unmet.
