Watch Dogs Movie Wraps Filming, Promises Original Story

Ubisoft and Sony Pictures finalize Watch Dogs movie, bringing a fresh story distinct from the video game, with filming completed in 2024.

Yes, it's confirmed. The official live-action movie adaptation of Watch Dogs has finally escaped development hell. Ubisoft and Sony Pictures are yet to announce an official release date for Watch Dogs, but filming for the movie wrapped in September 2024.

In a recent Screen Rant interview with Watch Dogs star Tom Ble, the actor shared how they're fine-tuning the final cut. "We just went back and did re-shoots on it recently and made it even better. It's cool. Sophie Wild's amazing. It's not the game. It is very different. They've done an amazing job of making—I don't want to spoil too much. I'm trying to pick my words carefully, but they've done an amazing job of making the game into a film. It feels very film. It doesn't feel like they've tried to copy and paste the game onto the screen. It feels like its own thing, and it feels like the beginning of a world-building exercise," Ble explained.

Known for his role in the fifth Hunger Games movie, Tom Ble is one of the only three confirmed cast members of Watch Dogs. Based on Bleu's comments, the movie will tell an original story that's not directly based on the video games. Apart from Tom Ble, the other two confirmed cast members are Sophia Wild, aka Mia from Talk to Me, and Markeela Kavanaaugh, whom you might remember from The Rings of Power. For now, it's unclear exactly what their roles will be, although we know they won't be playing characters from the games.

And while this may upset longtime players, it may be worth the risk. After all, it's not the plot of Watch Dogs that's burned into every player's memory. It's the gameplay. To the uninitiated, the Watch Dogs video games are famous for one thing: allowing players to hack almost everything in the game's open world environment, which is modeled after a real-life city. Controlling traffic lights, phones, or trains is just the beginning. Any connected device is fair game, and combined with other tools like facial recognition, and AI, Watch Dogs allows players to bend the city to their will.

The first Watch Dogs game was released back in 2014. And over a decade later, its core concept is even more relevant in the increasingly connected world. So maybe an original story based on Watch Dogs is the right way to go, as the concept paves the way for stories in the crime, thriller, espionage, and even sci-fi genres.

On the other hand, even if the main plot and characters aren't directly connected to the games, the Watch Dogs movie needs to somehow feature at least one original character. Also known as the fox, the grey hat hacker Aiden Pierce is the protagonist of the first Watch Dogs game. Aiden's phone, the profiler, is what makes Watch Dogs' unique hacking mechanics possible. And it was also Aiden's personal crusade that made an entire generation of players nostalgic about the gritty streets of a futuristic Chicago.

Here at Screen Rant, we've already come to terms with the fact that Aiden is unlikely to be the protagonist of Watch Dogs. But whatever the movie is about, it would be remiss without a cameo appearance or even just a reference to the hacker that started it all.
