Adapting the second half of the musical, Wicked for Good picks up where the first movie left off. With Elphaba now being known across Oz as the wicked witch of the west, a student prodigy turned enemy of the state, Elphaba serves as the central focus of how Wicked subverts the themes of the Wizard of Oz.
In fact, before Madame Morrible and the wizard made Elphaba public enemy number one, it was actually the wizard who turned Elphaba's skin green. A side effect of an elixir that the wizard sold to Elphaba's then pregnant mother. And in Wicked for Good, we finally come to the conclusion of not just Elphaba's journey, but also that of her best friend, Glinda.
In the original Wizard of Oz movie, Glinda simply represents everything that's good and magical. But Wicked revealed that this wasn't really the case. As it turns out, Glinda has little to no magical ability, and her powers and position as the good witch were given to her by the wizard and Madame Morrible, who are actually forcing Glinda to be the public face of Emerald City.
Yet, there's one thing that the real villains can't control. The deep mutual love and friendship between Glinda and Elphaba. Conversely, this next character is bound for tragedy in Wicked for Good. In the Wizard of Oz, Glinda gives Dorothy her iconic red slippers, which she takes from the dead body of Nessarose, Elphaba's sister.
In Wicked for Good, we'll finally see the events that led up to the death of Nessarose, arguably the most tragic character from the original movie. Before her fated death, Nessarose's unrequited love for her husband Boq transforms her into the despotic ruler of Munchkinland, which is also how she earns the moniker of the wicked witch of the east.
And in a way, all these three witches were the creation of one man, the main antagonist of Wicked for Good. The original movie already exposed the Wizard of Oz for being a fake wizard. But Wicked takes things way further, revealing not just the wizard's real name, Oscar Diggs from Kansas, but also what he did to achieve his position of power.
With help from Madame Morrible, Oscar not only orchestrated the fall of Shiz University's most promising student, but also her rise as the wicked witch of the west. While Wicked hooked viewers with Elphaba and Glinda's emotional journey, Wicked for Good will reveal the depths of evil through the Wizard of Oz himself.
And finally, the second act of Wicked wouldn't be complete without the original protagonists. Warning, this includes massive spoilers for Wicked for Good. In the second act of the story, Boq the Munchkin will become the Tin Man, and Prince Fiyero will transform into the Scarecrow. As for the Cowardly Lion, aka Brrr, he is actually the lion cub that Elphaba helped escape from Shiz University.
But while these characters are highly anticipated, it is Dorothy Gale that we can't wait to see in Wicked for Good. So, how do you think Wicked 2 will treat the crucial role of Dorothy and her friends in the conclusion of the story? Tell us in the comments, and thanks for reading Screen Rant.
