Warning, this contains spoilers for some of the best episodes of Supernatural. In Night Shifter, Sam and Dean investigate a series of robberies, all committed by the unlikeliest of culprits. Combining the heist and horror genres, Night Shifter is among the early episodes where the brothers reveal how terrifyingly capable they can be. But while this episode reveals the deep impact of this dark world on regular people, Night Shifter remains a funny, self-contained story that plays out like a mini movie. And this also makes it a great intro for those who haven't seen even one episode of Supernatural, much like this next one.
The Mystery Spot isn't just one of the best time loop episodes in fantasy TV. Featuring Sam getting stuck in a time loop where Dean repeatedly dies, Mystery Spot is a high-stakes episode that pits the hunters against the trickster. Fair warning though, Mystery Spot's repeated use of the song Heat of the Moment by Asia can result in an awesome case of last song syndrome. Combined with how the time loop story is cleverly told through the environment, Mystery Spot may be the single greatest 40-minute tribute to Groundhog Day.
If you're looking for a heftier dose of Supernatural's dark humor, this episode may be more up your alley. Yellow Fever is a strong contender for being the funniest episode of Supernatural. After Sam and Dean just get back from hell, Dean is afflicted with a disease that threatens to literally scare him to death. Strangely enough, despite being in season 4, Yellow Fever is among the few Supernatural episodes that could be shown to first-time viewers. And while this episode's combination of humor and tragedy seems weird, this only makes Yellow Fever all the more entertaining.
Before we continue, one last spoiler warning is in order. The final two entries include huge spoilers for the overarching plot of Supernatural. For longtime viewers already familiar with Supernatural, Lazarus Rising is among the most rewatchable episodes for several reasons. For starters, this is the episode where Dean is raised from the bowels of hell. We also get to see Sam using his demon powers. And most epic of all, after three seasons of the boys discussing the possibility of angels, Lazarus Rising finally introduces Castiel, kicking off what many consider to be the greatest arc in the entire series.
Finally, this brings us to what many consider to be hands down the best ever episode of Supernatural. Originally envisioned by Eric Kripke to be the final episode of Supernatural, Swan Song is unanimously known as the greatest finale to any of the show's many long-term arcs. Indeed, Swan Song concludes in the ultimate bittersweet Monkey's Paw ending. Sam and Lucifer are trapped in an eternal struggle while Dean must learn to live without his brother, a hefty price for saving the world. To be fair, Supernatural delivers many more awesome storylines after the original Eric Kripke run. But here at Screen Rant, we wouldn't have minded if Supernatural ended with Swan Song, the culmination of the show's first five seasons. But what do you think? Tell us which episodes of Supernatural should have made this list.
